Graded: Moderate-Challenging
Walks: Moderate to challenging day walks
4 nights accommodation
Focus: Walking in Alpine environment, small group, mountains
Destinations: Alpine National Park, Dinner Plain, Mt Feathertop, Mt Hotham, Australian Alps National Landscape
Educational discovery level: Moderate

This is a small group tour which will take you walking on the roof of Victoria with a lovely balance of short and half day walks, although the highlight is a challenging full day walk to Victoria's second highest peak, Mt. Feathertop (1922m).

Imagine a guided walking holiday where you can stretch your legs on some energetic walks and then wander slowly across grassy alpine plains enjoying the balmy autumn weather. Watch for late season wildflowers at your feet and admire the stately snowgums, sculptured by the wind. From lofty peaks, gaze across a sea of mountains and pause to soak up the peace and solitude.

The superb ridge-top walk along The Razorback ridge to the summit of Mt. Feathertop and return is tackled as a long day walk (22km), so you do need to be fit. This is Alpine walking at its best, but it is also challenging.

Carry only a light day pack on each of the bushwalks as our overnight accommodation is in a cosy ski lodge at Dinner Plain Village.  Return at the end of the day return to the lodge for a hot shower and time to put your feet up or enjoy a good book until your meal appears like magic!  Enjoy the company of a small group of like-minded walkers and share the challenges and the joys that the mountains provide.

Add the stunning beauty of the mountains, your guide’s local knowledge and enthusiasm for nature, some interesting local history especially around Omeo and you have a really memorable walking holiday.

The Australian Alps is included on the National Heritage List recognising the outstanding natural, indigenous and historic values of this iconic landscape.

Feathertop Adventure
By C. Coulson (Vic)
The large envelope arrived on the first cold day of winter.  Snuggled by the fire I gazed one by one at the photos Jenny had sent me.  There we all were, high on the Razorback Track, with the final summit climb to Mt Feathertop peak in view behind us.  Flyveils, solid boots, daypacks, sweaty, grateful for shade – a far cry from a winter evening indoors.

The climb along Razorback had begun at 7am and we moved along keeping warm.  After a couple of hours we were glad to rest in the grassy dell.  The super-fit had gone ahead to a pre-arranged meeting point.  Those needing help with walking poles and guidance were always supported by one of the guides.  Everyone likes to choose their own pace on a challenging walk and this we could do.

The day was perfect for the journey - and the scenery and wildflowers exquisite.  By the time we lunched beneath the summit, even the last wisps of cloud had departed giving the summiteers a perfect 360o view of pristine territory and occasional habitation.

It was a magic experience to stand on the top, definitely worth the last steep climb (count 20 steps – rest, count 20 steps – rest!!)  Thank you Jenny for getting us there and sharing a special part of the world with us.

“The walking was fantastic as was the company.  Because everything is so well organised it is a tremendously relaxing way to spend a week.  I anticipated it would be enjoyable but it far exceeded my expectations.”
