Graded: Moderate - Challening

Walks: Long Day Walks, steep descents & ascents

3 nights vehicle-based camping

Focus:
Sub-alpine Bushwalking

Destinations:
Tali Karng, Alpine National Park

Educational discovery level: Moderate

Join a small group on a guided walking tour to discover Tali Karng, a lake with an aura of mystery, hidden away between folds of mountains at the head of the Wellington River. Full day walks include steep gradients, so you will need a good level of fitness, but we walk from a base camp, so there are no packs to carry.

Tali Karng is the only deep natural lake in the Victorian Alps.  The hidden nature of the lake is highlighted by explorer Alfred Howitt’s many unsuccessful attempts to reach it.

With special significance to the Gunai Kurnai people, this sacred site was often wrongly thought to be unknown to aboriginal people.  Despite their strong connections to this country they do not visit the lake and ask visitors not to camp there overnight.

We respect the wishes of the Gunai Kurnai and will not be camping at the lake. Instead we camp near an historic hut on the plateau above and enjoy Tali Karng by day with lots of quiet time on the lake shore. Our approach from the southern end of the Wellington Plains requires a steep descent so you will be glad to enjoy some quality time relaxing on the shores of the lake.  Surrounded by mountains, explore, relax or enjoy a lazy swim taking in the serenity and very special atmosphere of the lake.

In addition we spend a day hiking out to The Sentinels, a great rocky vantage point to look over Tali Karng from above and relive your visit to the lake.  Enjoy the trek across grassy sub-alpine plains, through snowgum woodland and even briefly through some wonderful Alpine Ash forest to complete a refreshing short walking holiday.

Maximum of 4 participants only.
