The Flinders Ranges have for a long time been a classic holiday destination for lovers of rugged scenery, walking, wildlife and wildflowers.  The Flinders has so much more as well! The geology that makes up these rugged ranges and valleys is fascinating and the history is rich and varied.

This Natural History tour of the Flinders Ranges allows you to appreciate all these aspects and more.  Expertly led by a naturalist guide, you will gain an appreciation of how plants and animals interact and survive in an often harsh climate.  Learn and experience first hand some of the issues including the boom and bust nature of this land and the impact of feral animals.

The plant life is varied and the magnificent gums of the dry creek beds have a wonderful character all of their own.  Careful observation is likely to reveal small wildflowers, especially if recent rains have fallen.

Our birdlist from the past few years is very comprehensive and there will be ample time for birdwatching as we visit different habitats. If history is more to your liking, you will be well rewarded with a wide range of historic sites ranging from the early aboriginal rock art of the first people through to many ruins highlighting the hardships of early European settlers.  In addition you will discover scenes which are familiar to you from classic photographs or artworks.

This trip is fully accommodation, so every night we stay in basic but comfortable accommodation.  One of the highlights is our four nights spend in shearers quarters on a station property near Blinman, a fine base for exploring the central Flinders Ranges.  In addition there is the option of a flight to Arkaroola to take in this rugged part of the northern Flinders. The flight can also incorporate the famous ridge top 4WD tour from Arkaroola.

There will be lots of short walks, but all of easy-moderate grade.  The pace will be leisurely as we pause, look, discuss and photograph as we go. Sit quietly beside a waterhole in a gum-lined creekbed, listening to frogs, watching birds or stretch your legs on a longer walk, often the choice is yours.

This natural history tour offers you an opportunity to gain a real appreciation and understanding of the Flinders Ranges and return invigorated and informed.

Maximum of 10 participants only.

Stories and Comments from past participants

A feast of happy memories by Tim & Ros (Victoria)
Once again you have provided us with a feast of happy memories as well as some happy feasts.  We really do appreciate your wide range of skills – organising, driving, cooking, finding birds and plants.  And simply the gift of bringing a diverse group of people into a harmonious whole.  We are delighted that some friends of ours recommended your tours – we have now had three memorable adventures with Gippsland High Country Tours and look forward to others to come. Keep up the good work.

Fabulous Flinders Ranges by Nancy (Melbourne)
Another fabulous trip!  I thoroughly enjoyed the time we had to explore, observe the plants and birds.  A wonderful group to be part of and I love how you welcome all contributions to enrich our knowledge and experience.  I look forward to travelling with you again.  Keep it up!

Special Birthday present by Lisa (Melbourne)
I have had the time of my life on this trip to the Flinders Ranges, number 3 with Gippsland High Country Tours.  This one a special birthday present to myself.  I feel lucky to have travelled with a  beautiful group of women and to have had perfect weather, spectacular scenery and wildlife, fresh country air, great accommodation and great food.  I was so excited to see the Flinders Rangers and Mallee country not to mention just getting so far away from the city.  I will never forget the gums, the rocks, the Yellow-footed Rock Wallabies and ALL THE COLOURS as well as the scenic flight!!!

A wonderful trip through the Flinders Ranges by Jean (Victoria)
Jenny our leader is the most wonderful hostess with great knowledge of the areas we travel, the birds and animals and all things of nature.  Our group has also been keen to learn the history of local settlement.  Thank you Jenny, it has been a long ambition to walk in this beautiful area.  I look forward to perhaps yet another adventure with you.

“I liked the focus on natural history and the time available to appreciate it.” Sandra (NSW)
