Discover the language of nature; the richness of the bird’s dawn chorus and sounds of the bush during the day in a variety of habitats. Andrew Skeoch from Listening Earth is an educator, naturalist, environmental thinker, and one of Australia's best-known nature sound recordists, who will bring his enthusiasm for nature sounds to join forces with Jenny on this very special tour.

When we think about spending time out in nature most of us think first about what we will be seeing.  Will I see nice views, pretty flowers or wildlife perhaps? We would like to introduce you to the art of listening to the sounds of nature and help you both sharpen your listening skills and learn more about what nature sounds tell us about various landscapes and what lives in them.

Andrew will also lead you on deeply immersive sound walks, allowing you to experience the bush in an entirely different way.  His unique perspectives, enthusiasm and generosity in sharing knowledge will open a fascinating new way for you to enjoy the bush.

Then as night falls is seems so quiet, but is it?  Hopefully we will hear nocturnal wildlife and owls as well as tiny sounds that many people rarely notice.

Along the way Jenny will lead you to explore bushland around our cottage accommodation, plus parts of the Mitchell River National Park.  From dry rain-shadow woodland, to pockets of warm temperate rainforest, this park protects Victoria’s largest un-dammed river catchment.

Andrew will have some formal presentations and you will be introduced to the equipment used for nature sound recordings and maybe try your hand at recording yourself. This promises to be a wonderful journey of discovery and places are very limited on each departure.

Fully accommodated every night in a delightful cottage set in gardens and bushland, perfect for birdwatching and nature explorations. Shady verandahs outside and a cosy wood fire inside provide plenty of choices to relax for quiet times. Walks are mostly short and easy but will include a variety of terrain, check with us if you have concerns.

The main destinations on this tour are not fire affected

Stories & Comments from past participants

Nature sounds and bird calls by Ruth Akie
This tour in September was so stimulating and left me with much to consider about  my previous conceptions of bird calls. The organisation of Jenny combined with sound expert Andrew Skeoch made for a very different and exciting tour.

The very early morning experiences in the bush were magical. To be above the Den of Nargun to listen as dawn broke was an unforgettable time. Then to view the soundscapes that Andrew had made from within the rainforest gully gave a very unique picture of our experience.

The cottage where we stayed was surrounded by birds and was ideal as a base. We were all keen to make the most of listening to sounds in the bush so early morning rises were greeted with no complaints.

We were so fortunate to have Andrew Skeoch, who is an extremely experienced and exciting expert in sound recording. It was an unforgettable tour guided by Jenny in her very capable and relaxed manner. Thanks for a wonderful time, Ruth

Wonderful accommodation.  Physically, visually and spiritually, couldn’t be better.  The input from Jenny and Andrew was amazing, immediate and very interesting.  Andrew’s field of study opened so many new doors of thought, both moment to moment and the big picture.  Thank you very much. Catherine (Vic)
